Here is another great cover of a Beatles song by Joe Cocker. His first was done back in 1964, which was a powerful rendition of "I'll Cry Instead." From his second album, Joe Cocker!, released in November 1969, here is "Something." Arguably one of George Harrison's best contributions to The Beatles catalog, it is one of several songs written with his wife Patti in mind.
Leon Russell had recently been tracked by Denny Cordell, who was Joe cocker's producer. Cordell invited Leon to Joe's sessions at A&M and was soon after that, coproducing the album with him, and recording songs Leon had written. Two nighttime sessions led by Leon on July 22, 1969 were spent on "Something To Say" and George's song, known at the time as "Something In The Way She Moves," a line George "borrowed" from James Taylor's song. As with the night before, Milt Holland handled three percussive instruments while drummer Paul Humphries handled two drum tracks, with Leon on piano and guitar. Being from England, The Grease Band members were not in the L.A. Union and left off the contract. For this session guitarist Mike Deasy was brought in. "Something to Say" was left unissued and later appeared on Joe's self-titled 1972 album from a different session.
