I couldn’t think of a better place to spend International Fishermen’s Day; a day for the global recognition of the hardworking people who bring us seafood, safeguard food security, and keep coastal communities alive.

The UK’s commercial fishing industry has shaped our nation’s culture and coastline. Generations of fishermen and families, living a way of life that’s deeply connected to the sea, yet the only story we’re told is one of destruction.

There’s no denying that fisheries management still has room for improvement, but the narrative we so often hear, that fishermen are the villains in the ocean story, is far too simplistic, and it isn't what I see working alongside the fishing industry as a marine biologist and commercial fisheries consultant.

That’s why I do what I do.

I’m proud to work alongside fishermen, to listen, to advocate, and to help bridge the gap between science, policy, and those who live and work at sea.

So here’s to raising fishermen voices, and to celebrating the fishing industry that’s shaped British culture 🎣🦞🦀
