But the truth is far more complicated. Fishermen don’t set quotas, write policy, or decide enforcement. They catch what they’re told to catch — often within a system stacked against them.
For decades, fishermen have been ringing the alarm: calling for better management, stronger enforcement, and protections for the sea. Yet their voices are ignored.
When governments act too late, small-scale fishermen pay the price. In Cornwall, the sudden Pollack closure has devastated under-15m boats; the very vessels that have the lowest impact and the deepest ties to our coastal communities.
