The odachi first appeared in the 5th century during the Heian Period and reached peak popularity in the 14th century Nanboku-cho period. Originally designed as an anti-cavalry weapon to strike down horses before they could reach you, the odachi required extraordinary strength, perfect timing, and open battlefield conditions to be effective.

Sasaki Kojiro, the Sword Saint and chief weapons master of the Hosokawa clan, proved that this "impossible" weapon could be mastered. His nodachi "Monohoshizao" had a 35-inch blade—50% longer than a standard katana. His legendary duel with Miyamoto Musashi on April 13, 1612, would go down as the most famous sword fight in Japanese history.

But as warfare evolved with spears, guns, and infantry tactics, the odachi became obsolete. After the Siege of Osaka, the Tokugawa shogunate banned long swords entirely, and the odachi transitioned from battlefield weapon to ceremonial offering at Shinto shrines.

This is the story of a weapon that pushed the limits of what was possible—a sword too big to be practical, yet legendary in the hands of those few who could wield it.
