Title: What is the Secret of Success? Is it Talent, Hard Work, or Just Plain Luck?

Abstract: Aristotle famously said: “educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.” This talk is my humble attempt to self-educate my heart. I recently completed my 31st year of (post-Ph.D.) employment; over the past three decades, I have had the opportunity to work on a range of water management topics including groundwater quantity, soil physics, and water quality. I must admit that the fun part of this journey is training 15 Ph.D. students, and many other post-doc, M.S., and undergrad students, and publishing interesting articles with them. It’s been an honor and a truly rewarding experience.

In this talk, I will first provide a brief overview of my students’ work. After that, we'll reflect on more general philosophical questions: what does "success" in a research career signify, and what is the secret of success? I'll use the story of a Nobel laureate, Max Planck, as an example to discuss the complex nature of one’s path to success. I will argue that "success" is a complicated vector that must be defined in a three-dimensional space, with talent, hard work, and luck serving as basis vectors. While all three are essential components of success, which one is the critical component and why--are difficult questions to answer. I will share my perspective on seeking answers to these questions and look forward to learning from others’ perspectives. If you are looking for a complex modeling lecture, please be ready to be disappointed by the lack of quantifiable analysis in this talk. But, I promise, it will be a fun philosophical talk that will challenge you to think!
