Abandoned Rails, Ruins, & 1800’s Foundry Equipment
South Troy, Troy, NY
Well, my video this time was not what I had planned. I was going to look for any ruins in an area where the original road to Springwood Manner was and where old Main Ave. used to pass through. This was generally in the same area where Warr St. was, and I had done further research. As I was getting prepared to start my investigation I came across the property owners as they were leaving. They were nice and didn’t mind me walking back there but they wanted to protect their privacy. They didn’t care about hiking and taking photos but no vlogging. So, disappointed I decided to do some “cold” vlogging.
I lefty there and went over to Main St. and what is now called East Industrial Parkway. On the 1858 map it’s appears to have originally had been in the vicinity of Front St. This area was the industrial center of Troy in the mid 1800’s. Burden Iron Works was one of these manufacturers and in past videos we explored the ruins of some of its abandoned buildings. I stopped at the Main office of the ‘one-time’ company which is now a museum. The museum was closed but I was able to view some of the large pieces of equipment used in the iron foundry and get a better perspective of the sizes involved. I was also able to view the outside of the building and noticed that the front of the building interacted with the railroad. Today the rail line is the Troy Industrial Line but originally it was the Troy and Greenbush Railroad connecting the Delaware and Hudson Railroad in Troy to the Albany and West Stockbridge Railroad in Greenbush (Rensselaer).
I then drove down to Madison St. farther down the rail line and investigated some of the abandoned train tracks, railcars, and some of the ruins along the railroad. Parking at Madison St. I walked down to Adams Street along the tracks. investigating some of the hoppers that were there and in particular noticing a long abandoned hopper. I then continued down the line crossing the Postenkill Canal and viewing a long disused and ruined trestle. As I continued down to Adams I passed some ruins in the scrub woods appearing to have been used with the railroad tracks crossing the trestles that were long gone. and then came upon the old Hudson Railroad Freight Depot which has a new life as storage and an office.
I hope you liked the impromptu video of this area of South Troy, the railroad, and some of Burden Iron Works large equipment. I’ve added maps from 1858 and 1904 so you can see what the area looked like compared to what is there today. Please leave a comment and if you have more history include that too.
