Again, we played the awful GBC port, so we had to get the real thing up. Again, a totally opposite experience.
This might surprise you, but GTA1+2 were not revolutionary when they came out. They weren't even a big deal. This kind of game had been done before many times, but usually it was just based around the driving and it was never to the scope that Rockstar tried. Was it fun? Sure, or we wouldn't have made it to 3.
The controls aren't great and it can be a vague, fiddly experience at times. The top-down view works, but it certainly limits your ability to visualize a path, look ahead, plan stuff out, etc. The QOL that later games introduced, plus the whole concept of cell phones, improved the series. You'll notice all of that missing here. It's a tough game to go back to, but once you've spent a decent amount of time, it won't feel so bad.
