Katie Brown is the Director of English Language Programs at Washington University in St. Louis’s Washington University in St. Louis Continuing & Professional Studies (CAPS). She assists students in developing English language proficiency, graduate-level communication skills, and professional English competency.
For the FMI December 2025 Newsletter, we interviewed Katie Brown to learn more about her current work with the EMPOWER Program, what motivates her to serve newcomer communities, and how she envisions the future of the program. She also discussed the population she works with, shared insights on early outcomes observed so far, and reflected on the potential for scaling or adapting the EMPOWER Program model in other university and community settings.
