In this video I give examples of different negative thinking styles.
1. Catastrophising
2. Personalising/Blaming
3. Should Statements
4. Emotional Reasoning
5. Mind Reading
6. Predicting the Future
7. Discounting or Depersonalising the Positive
8. All of Nothing Thinking
I also briefly speak about different things we can do to help negative thinking
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy approaches - looking at the evidence for and against thoughts.
Parts work (Internal Family System's approaches) - understanding why a part of us might think like this and developing an understanding and self compassionate response.
Meditation - which can help us become more of an observer of thoughts
Acceptance and Commitment therapy techniques - becoming aware of a thought as just language and not giving meaning to it - e.g. signing the thought to the tune of happy birthday.
I'm not a medical professional so this is not medical advice or mental health advice. Seek help from your primary care doctor or local services if you are concerned about your health or mental health.
On this channel I speak about topics related to Long Covid, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and other similar conditions. I found the work of Dr. John Sarno really helpful, in particular his book The Mindbody Prescription. I also found Internal Family Systems (IFS) approaches useful for helping me learn how to get more aware of emotions. Dr. John Sarno, speaks about Tension Myositis Syndrome (TMS) - a condition underpinned by repressed emotions, his work and the work of his colleagues help many people including those with chronic fatigue and chronic pain.
