The debate over Acme Feed and Seed’s massive property tax increase is intensifying.
Metro Councilmember Jacob Kupin says he was “appalled” by Mayor Freddie O’Connell’s recent comments suggesting it’s not up to him whether the iconic Lower Broadway business stays open.
Kupin, who represents downtown, says the message struck a nerve — not just with him, but with many in his district.
“It’s contrary to what my district believes It was really a disappointing message from the mayor,” Kupin said. “Our job is not to say, ‘too bad, so sad.’ Our job is to protect these businesses.”
Acme Feed & Seed is facing a reported $600,000 annual property tax bill — an increase of nearly half a million dollars in one year. Owner Tom Morales says the spike could force the historic venue to close its doors.
Kupin says this isn’t just about one building.
“Every time a business closes its doors, I feel like Nashville is losing a piece of itself,” he said.
Kupin says he’s working on several possible paths to provide relief:
Meeting with the Davidson County Property Assessor’s Office
Exploring property tax abatement and proration tools allowed under state law
Working with state lawmakers to identify additional relief options
Reviewing whether a new appraisal or formal appeal could reduce the tax burden
He acknowledges Metro is limited by state code but says a jump from just over $100,000 to $600,000 demands action.
“We’ve got to figure something out,” Kupin said. “We can’t just leave this as it is.”
The frustration extends beyond Acme.
Several Broadway business owners tell FOX 17 News they are concerned about rising property values and escalating taxes. Some fear they could be next.
Kupin says the city became the “It City” because of locally owned staples like Acme — and replacing them isn’t that simple.
“Some of these businesses are irreplaceable,” he said. “We need to fight to protect them.”
