A resolution urging Nashville Electric Service’s power board to fire the utility’s CEO is on hold.
Metro Council members voted to defer the measure, saying they need more time. However, NES’s response during January’s ice storm continues to draw controversy.
The resolution was introduced by Councilmembers Courtney Johnston and Emily Benedict. It urges the Nashville Electric Service Electric Power Board to terminate CEO Teresa Broyles-Aplin.
More than 230,000 people were left without power after the January ice storm brought down trees, branches and power lines.
Ahead of the storm, NES’s internal audit found the utility was at risk of outages due to a lack of tree trimming. The utility also faced backlash over the number of linemen on the job.
Councilmember Courtney Johnston said her support for the resolution reflects the concerns of her constituents.
“My voice is a reflection of the people that I represent. And they want accountability,” Johnston said.
She added that she believes enough information is already public to raise concerns about decision-making.
However, Councilmember Robert Nash said he does not agree with moving forward with the resolution at this time.
“I don't know that they could have planned any better, not really knowing how much damage the storm was going to be here,” Nash said.
Nash also said NES staff have expressed their support for Broyles-Aplin and are standing behind their CEO, which he believes is important to consider when discussing leadership changes.
The resolution has been deferred.
