Barkhor Street, the heart of Tibet, is the central kora around Jokhang Temple, where you can enjoy the culture of real Tibet and can see thousands and thousands of people from all over Tibet with so many different colorful costumes.

Why Barkhor Street is so important? Because it is the single circumambulation around Jokhang Temple, the Buddhist spiritual center of Tibet. For centuries, pilgrims from all over Tibet came here to do the holy kora around Jokhang Temple. The location also makes it the center of ancient Lhasa town.

Starting from the square in front of the Jokhang Temple, I followed the clockwise direction to walk around Jokhang Temple. The holy road, Barkhor Street, is about 1000 meters long, with 35 backstreets and alleys. I finished Barkhor kora in 30 minutes. But you can spend more time while walking along Barkhor Street.

The two sides of Barkhor Street are lined with stores, most of which sell kinds of Tibetan specialties, such as traditional Tibetan clothes, colorful Tibetan accessories, exquisite Tibetan handicrafts, and so on. These stores not only attract many foreign tourists but also are frequented by local Tibetans.

When you walk in Barkhor Street, do not just look at street stores. If you pay attention to the people walking past you, you will also get some surprises.

As the famous pilgrimage circuit, Barkhor Street is one of the holy destinations for many Tibetans outside Lhasa. You can see different pilgrims, from lamas in red robes to elderly pilgrims doing the kora around Jokhang Temple.

Also, you may meet children living on Barkhor Street play around you, and see tourists from all over the world taking photos in their best poses here.
