The medieval Jewish community of Vitoria-Gasteiz was one of the most significant in the Basque Country, with a thriving population engaged in trade, medicine, finance, and civic life. Centered in the city’s historic judería near today’s Santa María area, the community flourished until the 1492 expulsion, when most Jews were forced to leave or convert. A unique legacy of Vitoria’s Jews is the Judizmendi cemetery, which the city council pledged to protect upon their departure — a promise that helped preserve the memory of the community long after its dispersal. Though the Jewish presence disappeared after 1492, Vitoria remains an important site of Jewish heritage and historical remembrance in the Basque region.
