This video explores the history of the Judería of Tudela, home to one of the most significant Jewish communities in the Kingdom of Navarre for many centuries. Jews lived in Tudela from at least the early Middle Ages, first under Muslim rule and later under Christian rulers after the city was reconquered in 1119.
During the 12th and 13th centuries, Tudela’s Jewish community flourished as an important aljama (self-governing Jewish community). Jews played key roles in trade, medicine, crafts, administration, and scholarship, and the city became known for its learned figures — most famously the traveler Benjamin of Tudela.
The Judería developed as a distinct neighborhood near the city walls, with synagogues, study houses, a cemetery, and communal institutions. Daily life blended religious tradition with interaction across Christian and Muslim society, reflecting the complex coexistence of medieval Navarre.
The 14th and 15th centuries brought new taxes, restrictions, and moments of tension, leading some Jews to convert or migrate. The community nevertheless continued to exist until the final expulsion of the Jews from the Kingdom of Navarre in 1498, several years after the 1492 expulsion in Castile and Aragon.
Today, the streets of Tudela’s old Jewish quarter preserve echoes of this centuries-long history — a reminder of a vibrant Sephardic world that once thrived here.
