This webinar will demonstrate how we can improve the interoperability among MIR instruments and spectral libraries for soil properties estimation.
How can we use mid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopy to predict soil properties across different instruments? Soil spectroscopy is a powerful tool that can provide rapid and low-cost estimates of various soil properties, such as carbon, pH, and clay content. However, different instruments and protocols can affect the quality and compatibility of soil spectra, making it challenging to share and integrate spectral data across laboratories. In this webinar, Dr. Safanelli will present the results of a recent study (https://doi.org/10.1002/saj2.20513) that tested the transferability of models developed using a large public mid-infrared (MIR) soil spectral library to a secondary instrument. He will also discuss our complementary research that evaluated the lab-to-lab variability of multiple MIR instruments using a ring trial experiment. He will show how different mathematical treatments, modeling algorithms, and spectral standardization techniques can improve the prediction accuracy and reduce the bias of transferred models. These findings can help new laboratories to build spectroscopy capacity using existing MIR spectral libraries and support the global efforts to make soil spectroscopy universally accessible.
