It was a difficult delivery.
The shoulders got stuck in the mother's pelvis.
The baby's shoulders were too large for the mothers pelvis.
This is known as shoulder dystocia.
This is an obstetrical emergency.
When shoulder dystocia is recognized, obstetricians are taught at least five different obstetrical maneuvers to get the baby out.
Out of all the maneuvers doctors are taught, not one of them involves putting excessive traction on the baby's head or neck.
Historically, in an attempt to get the baby out quickly, some obstetricians have attempted to pull the baby's head or neck quickly in an effort to deliver the baby. Some of those deliveries have resulted in severe injury to the baby's arm.
When excessive traction is placed on the baby's head or neck during delivery involving a shoulder dystocia, it is possible that the group of nerves that control and innervate the arm and hand can become severely traumatized and in some cases permanently damaged.
Injury to the group of nerves controlling the arm and hand is known as the brachial plexus. If the trauma to the nerves is severe during delivery, this can result in permanent nerve damage to the arm that controls and innervates the arm and hand.
This is a condition known as erbs palsy.
A similar condition is known as brachial plexus palsy.
One of the maneuvers obstetricians are taught in the face of a shoulder dystocia is to rotate the baby shoulders in an effort to get it unstuck from within the mother's pelvis. That maneuver does NOT involve pulling on the baby's head or neck.
Another maneuver involves pulling the mother's legs and knees all the way back up to her chest. This often allows more flexibility and room as the baby descends down the birth canal.
Another method involves applying external suprapubic pressure to the mother in an attempt to get the stuck shoulder unstuck from mom's pubic bone.
