Transcript: I’m Father Dominic with another baking secret from the Bread Monk. You’ve probably seen recipes that call for you to cut shortening or butter into flour for biscuits or pastries. The tool you want is a bladed pastry blender like this one. Now, they make other kinds of pastry blenders that you may have seen. You can see that there’s a wire blender, but that’s for soft fats like lard, shortening, or softened butter like you might use for certain biscuit recipes. A bladed pastry blender can do all those things, plus it works for cold butter, like you need for puff pastry and scones. You can also go old school and use a granny fork like this one. They also come in other styles. You can see the one lying in front here that has bent tines. You can use a granny fork to cut in shortening and mix, like for cat head biscuits, but my blender of choice is always the one with the hard blades. I’m Father Dominic, the Bread Monk.
