OX4 Hot Duane Humbuckers...Can They Make Me Love My Les Paul?

Back in 2003/4, I bought my first Gibson guitar...a Les Paul Custom in Wine Red. Being a lefty, I don't have the luxury of going to guitar shops to try things out - I mostly just have to order online and hope for the best. I've been very lucky over the years; ending up with guitars I really like having bought them mostly blind.

But this Gibson...I've just...never bonded with it. There's always been something about it I haven't got on with, and I've tried many different sets of pickups, electronics, hardware, etc of the years trying to make it something I really want to play. The closest I got was some vintage-correct low-wind PAFs, chasing the Black Beauty "Fretless Wonder" sound...but it was still lacking something.

So, I went on the hunt for yet another new set of pickups...but this time, I had an idea of what I wanted. This lump of wood doesn't really suit low-wind PAFs; but I didn't want to stray far away from the PAF sound. I wanted a touch more output; more low end (so probably Alnico 5 magnets). I didn't want to sacrifice clarity. Or dynamics. They needed to 'bring the rock'. But I also wanted to buy them from a top UK boutique winder. No pressure then...

In the end, I settled on the OX4 Hot Duanes - as they seemed to fit the bill. I'm a big fan of Mark's work with his low-wind A4 PAFs in my SG and P90s in my ES-330...so I figured they would give me a great chance of tuning this guitar more to my liking.

What do you think? Amazingly balanced and dynamic? Or would you have gone for something else? Comment below!
