Ildebrando Pizzetti's Messa di Requiem was composed around 1922 and is rightly considered to be one of choral music's absolute principal works.
It consists of beautiful and magnificent worlds of timbre and sound that invite you to immerse yourself. In their sublime expression they seem almost divinely inspired and express a drama that in and of itself contains both the deepest degradation and the highest bliss.
After the collapse of civilization in World War I, many composers felt that a radically new style was needed to replace the otherwise dominant romantic style. This was also true of Ildebrando Pizzetti (1880–1968), who returned to the old masters and musical shapes in an effort to create something new.
