Boozhoo!
This is Point 3: Tower Steps & Fire Tower History. Ahead lie the steps to the historic Fire Tower. Let’s uncover why it was built and how local fire towers functioned.
The Fire Tower here on Caribou Mountain was constructed in 1961, replacing an earlier 85-foot steel tower from the 1930s and a 45-foot wooden tower built in 1910.
Its purpose was early wildfire detection: watchmen climbed daily during fire season to scan for smoke.
Local fire towers formed a network across Temagami and surrounding forests; each tower communicated via telegraph, telephone or radio to dispatch crews by triangulating compass bearings from two or three tower a precise location could be established on a map.
In Anishinaabemowin, a term for lookout could be "akandoo" ("uh'kun'doo").
These structures symbolized vigilance over forest and helped protect communities. The current tower was restored in the mid-1990s and officially re-dedicated in 1998.
Today we climb these steps as visitors, but originally, they served as workplaces in isolation, scanning vast horizons for signs of fire.
Climbing the tower offers perspective. You see forests stretching in all directions.
Fire regimes on the Canadian Shield were historically moderated by natural features such as lakes, marshes and swamps and the towers facilitated early detection and fire suppression to preserve the timber resources and built structures.
Technological advances like airplanes and satellites) reduced reliance on manned towers, but heritage preservation keeps this tower standing for education and recreation. Notice construction details: especially those round hoops on the outside of the structure. They enclosed the ladder used by the Fire Warden to climb to is work place. The metal staircases, platforms and safety railings were added for hikers.
Before ascending, check that your shoes have good traction; be mindful of wind at higher elevation. Seasonal conditions: steps may be icy in early spring or slippery when wet. Seasonal update notes on trail conditions appear on the webpage.
After returning, rest on the platform and scan ahead for Point 4: Lookout & History of Lake Temagami.”
