In this video, we’re going to follow a set of technical, step-by-step protocols for performing safe and accurate venipuncture in a wide range of clinical situations.
We’ll cover the standardized workflow for the three main collection methods:
Evacuated Tube Systems (ETS)
Winged infusion sets (butterfly needles)
Syringe draws
For each method, you’ll learn the correct mechanical sequence, what to watch for during collection, and how to consistently follow the validated order of draw to prevent additive carryover and specimen contamination.
We’ll also reinforce the non-negotiables that protect patients and protect you: positive patient identification, strict infection control, and safety steps that reduce risks like hemolysis, underfilled tubes, and needlestick injuries.
Then we’ll go into real-world troubleshooting—what to do after a failed attempt, how to recover safely, when to stop, and how to document appropriately so errors don’t compound.
Finally, we’ll cover special precautions for pediatric collections, including strict weight-based blood volume limits to reduce the risk of iatrogenic anemia, and how to adjust technique without compromising specimen quality.
By the end of this lesson, you’ll have a repeatable, sequenced procedure you can apply confidently—so every draw supports specimen integrity and patient safety.
