In this training video, you’ll learn how to perform radial arterial blood gas (ABG) collection using strict clinical technique and safety standards. We cover the full workflow—from confirming the patient is in a stable physiologic state to verifying collateral circulation with the Modified Allen test before you ever puncture. Then we walk through the key technical details that protect both accuracy and patient safety: correct positioning, 30–45° needle entry angle, minimizing trauma, and never aspirating so the syringe can self-fill under arterial pressure. You’ll also see why immediate anaerobic sealing is non-negotiable and how improper handling can distort results. Beyond the radial approach, we review when and how brachial and femoral access may be used, plus best practices for draws from indwelling arterial lines. Finally, we explain post-procedure care—especially extended compression to prevent hematomas—and the essential labeling and transport steps that preserve specimen integrity for reliable lab analysis.
