Week 2 - Focus on Footwork
This annotated study looks at the details of Swivel Step footwork and provides three common corrections to help you refine your steps.
The Swivel Step (aka Egyptian) in FCBD®Style is very grounded, with the hip movement originating from the feet rather than muscle contractions. Transferring weight between the feet creates the swishy and bouncy hip, which is further emphasized by controlling and isolating the leg movements.
Here are three key details about the Swivel Step footwork:
(1) Use the ground to power the hip -- To send the hip flying, transfer about 10% of your weight into the ball of the active foot by pressing into the ground as you twist the leg forward.
(2) Control and isolate the leg movement -- Don't let the knees cross the midline of your body or allow the toes to point in. Restricting motion in the legs will help protect the knee and isolate the movement in the hips to create a more emphatic sway.
(3) Keep the feet close -- Don't step out too far in front of you! Keeping the feet underneath you will help to keep your Egyptian Step grounded.
