Robust Castro lauds Socialism at 5th Party Congress

In his address to the 5th Cuban Communist Party in Havana on
Wednesday (8/10), President Fidel Castro proudly boasted that
the country had succeeded in defying US hegemony to remain
firmly on its socialist course. At the first party congress
since 1991 Castro stood tall in his formal olive-drab military
garb. He looked fit despite the rumours of ill-health that began
circulating in Florida's Cuban exile community after he went
five months without speaking in public. "We could not surrender,
we could not back down. It would not have been worthy of
history," an energetic Castro told almost 1,500 delegates from
the Caribbean island country of 11 million people. He will be 72
next week. The three-day congressional meeting was widely
expected to approve a document, already written, that lays out
an official message that Cuban Communism has weathered the
crisis caused by the loss of Soviet aid. The congress is also
expected to agree to continue with current economic plan.
