Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875-1912), arguably England's most famous Black composer, was known for his epic orchestral works. He studied composition with Charles Villiers Stanford at the Royal Northern College of Music from a young age, and went on to have a massively successful career as a composer and conductor. These tone-pictures are a classic example of his dense yet lyrical piano writing, packed with beautiful melodies and grand gestures.
