Fasting By Pastor David Robbins
What is our church-wide fast?
We are in a season of denying ourselves—a time of revival. As a result, we are starting a church-wide fast for seven days. God wants to encourage us in fasting. He wants to teach us to deny ourselves. Fasting is not to gain some special power. It is not a part of a reward system. It’s to help us hear and obey His voice and to experience revival.
What is fasting?
Fasting is primarily withholding from food. When you fast, you should still drink plenty of water. There are both full and partial fasts (Da. 10:3-13), and an absolute fast, which should only be done with supernatural direction. (Note: Women who are pregnant and those who have medical issues such as diabetes, should consider an alternative to food fasting.)
How should we fast?
In Mk. 9:29 (Mt. 17:21), Jesus said that this demon wouldn’t come out without prayer (“and fasting” in some texts). Praying and fasting were often done together.
However, we should pray with the right motives. Ja. 4:2-10 states, “…and even when you ask, you don’t get it because your motives are all wrong…” We must check our motives and take up our cross and follow Him. God is a jealous God. Living to satisfy ourselves makes us an enemy of God (Ja. 4:4-6). “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
Do you pray for things for your own pleasure? Pursuing pleasure crowds out the seed (the Word of God; Lk. 8). Pleasures can distract us from spiritual things. Some people try to escape their pain through many pleasurable things. Then they develop an emotional attachment to these things; they develop an addiction to them. Their brain gets wired to seek pleasure. Unfortunately, over time, addictions require more of what we are addicted to. We demand more pleasure.
What does fasting do for us?
Fasting breaks the cycle of seeking pleasure. When we fast, we recalibrate spiritually by denying ourselves. Fasting says “no.” It helps us with self-control, which is a fruit of the Spirit (Gal. 5:22-25).
