The Battle off Samar (October 25, 1944) was a central engagement of the Battle of Leyte Gulf and is widely regarded as one of the most legendary "last stands" in naval history. A small American task unit, Taffy 3, was unexpectedly forced to defend the invasion beachhead at Leyte against the Imperial Japanese Navy's (IJN) most powerful surface fleet.

The Combatants

The engagement pitted a massive Japanese armada against a vastly outgunned American support group:

IJN Center Force (Vice Admiral Takeo Kurita): 4 battleships (including the 72,000-ton Yamato), 6 heavy cruisers, 2 light cruisers, and 11 destroyers.

Taffy 3 (Rear Admiral Clifton Sprague): 6 small escort carriers ("jeep carriers"), 3 destroyers, and 4 destroyer escorts.

Key Events and Heroic Actions

The "Small Boys" Charge: To protect the slow carriers, the U.S. destroyers and destroyer escorts launched a suicidal counterattack. The USS Johnston (DD-557), led by Commander Ernest E. Evans, charged alone into the enemy line, followed by the Hoel, Heermann, and the USS Samuel B. Roberts (DE-413), known as the "destroyer escort that fought like a battleship".

Air Support: Lacking anti-ship ammunition, pilots from the escort carriers performed "dry runs" to distract Japanese gunners, dropping depth charges or even strafing with machine guns to disrupt the enemy's concentration.

Japanese Confusion: The sheer ferocity of the American defense convinced Admiral Kurita that he was facing a much larger force of fleet carriers and battleships from the U.S. Third Fleet.
Strategic Outcome: Fearing he was being lured into a trap and shaken by the losses of three heavy cruisers (Chōkai, Chikuma, and Suzuya), Kurita ordered a retreat, saving the Leyte invasion forces from destruction.

Losses and Casualties

The battle was costly for both sides, but it resulted in a strategic American victory.

United States: Lost the escort carriers Gambier Bay and St. Lo (the latter to the first organized Kamikaze attack), the destroyers Johnston and Hoel, and the destroyer escort Samuel B. Roberts. Total fatalities exceeded 1,100 men.

Japan: Three heavy cruisers sunk and several other major ships severely damaged.
In 2021 and 2022, the wrecks of the USS Johnston and USS Samuel B. Roberts were discovered at depths of over 21,000 feet, making them the deepest shipwrecks ever surveyed.
