Operation Hailstone was a massive United States Navy carrier-based air and surface attack on the Japanese stronghold at Truk Lagoon (now Chuuk Lagoon) on February 17–18, 1944.

Context & Objectives
Truk was the Imperial Japanese Navy's (IJN) primary forward base in the Central Pacific, often called the "Gibraltar of the Pacific" or the "Japanese Pearl Harbor".

Neutralization: The primary goal was to destroy Japanese air and naval assets to prevent interference with the upcoming U.S. invasion of Eniwetok.

Task Force 58: Led by Vice Admiral Marc Mitscher, the American force included 9 aircraft carriers, 7 battleships, and over 500 warplanes.
The Battle

Surprise Attack: U.S. forces achieved total surprise because Japanese radar was unable to detect low-flying planes.

Air Combat: In the initial "fighter sweep," Grumman F6F Hellcats decimated Japanese air defenses, shooting down roughly 30 Zeros in the first 90 minutes.

Surface Action: Admiral Raymond Spruance personally led a surface task group centered on the battleships USS Iowa and USS New Jersey to intercept fleeing Japanese ships. This was the only time these battleships fired their main 16-inch guns at enemy surface vessels.

Japanese Retaliation: A lone Japanese torpedo bomber successfully struck the USS Intrepid on the night of February 17, forcing it to retire for repairs.

Outcome & Aftermath
The operation was a decisive American victory that effectively ended Truk's utility as a major Japanese naval base.

Japanese Losses: Over 250 aircraft were destroyed, and more than 40 ships were sunk, including 2 light cruisers and 4 destroyers.

Strategic Impact: The destruction of 200,000 tons of shipping and several fleet oilers crippled the IJN's ability to maneuver, a disadvantage that persisted until the Battle of Leyte Gulf.

Modern Legacy: Today, Truk Lagoon is the world’s largest underwater shipwreck graveyard, serving as a premier destination for technical divers
