Explore how we can apply the principles of video game design such as mastery, frequent feedback, teamwork, and competition to blue collar work to make it more engaging while improving safety and productivity.
Sean Dessureault, PhD, is a former associate professor of Mining and Geological Engineering at the University of Arizona. Originally from Montreal, Sean worked at various mines throughout Canada in roles ranging from frontline miner, to mining engineer, to automation researcher. He studied the integration and effective use of mining information systems and has taught technology and engineering sustainability classes. In 2004 he founded MISOM Technologies Inc. to develop a tablet-based mobile app that combines sensors, big data, and gamification to create an innovative safety and production management platform. In 2013 the Mining Foundation of the Southwest awarded Sean their American Mining Hall of Fame Medal of Merit under 40 for his entrepreneurial and academic work supporting the technological transformation of mining. Sean Dessureault, PhD, is a mining engineer and researcher who founded MISOM Technologies Inc. and has been awarded the “Mining Foundation of the Southwest Hall of Fame Medal of Merit Under 40” for his entrepreneurial and academic work supporting the technological transformation of mining. He taught technology and engineering sustainability classes at the University of Arizona from 2002 to 2018. “Gamifying Blue Collar Work” proposes a way to make blue collar work more satisfying and safer, while increasing productivity and quality of work.
