Monte Bar (1,816 m above sea level) and Caval Drossa (1,632 m above sea level) together form one of the most panoramic hiking regions in Sottoceneri. Caval Drossa is often described topographically as the broad “southwestern shoulder” of Monte Bar.

Popular circular hike (Sentiero del Monte Bar)

This tour connects both peaks and offers views as far as Milan and the Monte Rosa massif.

• Route: Corticiasca – Motto della Croce – Caval Drossa – Monte Bar – Capanna Monte Bar – Corticiasca.
• Duration: approx. 5 to 6.5 hours.
• Distance: approx. 12 km.
• Ascent: approx. 1,000 meters.
• Difficulty: Classified as “difficult” (T2/T3) due to the steep ascent through meadows and forests.

Important landmarks

• Motto della Croce: A plateau with a striking summit cross, ideal for photos with Lugano in the background.
• Capanna Monte Bar: A modern mountain hut (1,600 m above sea level) with a panoramic terrace. Please note the seasonal opening hours (in winter primarily Friday–Sunday).
• Parcheggio Monte Bar: Parking lot at Corticiasca, which serves as the starting point. Note: According to reports, an access road was closed until October 2025; check the current accessibility on site.

Tips for the tour

• Sun protection: The trail often leads over open ridges and meadows without much shade.
• Water: Take sufficient supplies with you, as fountains along the trail often dry up in summer.
• Safety warning: Parts of the route run close to military grounds; paths may be closed during shooting exercises.
