In the Gallery: December 1–28
Ruth Simon McRae is an artist living in North Georgia who works in a wide range of mediums, including textile arts, painting, printmaking, mixed media, and ceramics. She experiments with materiality and layering by merging complex color combinations, pattern designs, and textures.
Featuring textile art including tallit - Jewish prayer shawls - and other items for ritual use, this exhibition combines McRae’s love of textiles with her spiritual practice. Many textile and painterly techniques were used in making the artwork, including Japanese shibori techniques of folding and stitching in combination with multi-hue dyeing as well as resist-dyed indigo. Stitching and embroidery were incorporated for emphasis; some pieces also include antique lace and other vintage materials that have been hand dyed and embellished.
