Richard Wagner composed the Faust Overture in the early years of his career, drawing inspiration from Faust by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Wagner began the work in 1839–1840, originally intending it as the first movement of a full symphony based on Goethe’s drama. Although he never completed the larger project, the overture itself survived and was later revised in 1855, after Wagner had developed his mature musical language. The piece attempts to capture the inner struggle of Faust—the restless scholar yearning for infinite knowledge and experience—through sweeping Romantic orchestration, brooding harmonies, and dramatic contrasts. Written during the height of the German Romantic movement, the overture stands as Wagner’s early attempt to translate one of the great myths of Western literature into orchestral form, foreshadowing the psychological intensity and musical drama that would later define his operas.
