Ludwig van Beethoven composed his Symphony No. 7 in A major, Op. 92 between 1811 and 1812, during a period of personal isolation in the Bohemian spa town of Teplitz, where he had gone in hopes of improving his worsening health and hearing. Despite these struggles, the symphony bursts with extraordinary vitality and rhythmic energy, so much so that Richard Wagner later famously called it “the apotheosis of the dance.” The work premiered on December 8, 1813, in Vienna at a charity concert for wounded soldiers of the Napoleonic Wars following the Battle of Hanau. Conducted by Beethoven himself and performed by an orchestra that included many of Vienna’s leading musicians, the symphony was an immediate triumph. The second movement, the solemn Allegretto, was so beloved by the audience that it had to be encored at the premiere. Today, Beethoven’s Seventh stands as one of the composer’s most celebrated works—an electrifying fusion of classical structure, relentless rhythm, and heroic spirit written at the height of his creative powers.
