Spartacus was a slave who led perhaps the most famous slave rebellion in history. He led a small group of gladiators to glory as they became a massive army of slaves fighting against Rome itself. Spartacus won great victories and threatened Rome many times, coming close to freedom for all of his followers, although he was eventually defeated and killed in battle.
The conventional narrative of Spartacus’s revolt as a slave insurrection is doubtful. Inconsistencies in the source material have led historians to create an alternate interpretation: that Spartacus’s war was a revolution by the lower classes of Rome.
