OVRLND Camping Near Banff: ALONE on the Ghost River + Hiking Near Jasper - Up to the Arctic Part 2

Sometimes we live on our sailboat, other time we explore Terra Firma with our OVRLND rig. Either way, its always an adventure!

In this video we cross the US-Canadian border and stop at Writings on Stone Provincial Park. This campsite was great because the temperature was perfect, there weren’t any bugs and we were able to get a great hike in on the Hoodoo Trail. Once we were rested up we pushed North to Calgary so that we could get our DJI Mini 3 drone repaired. The gimbal had been damaged during a previous landing. Drone Dynamics repaired the gimbal in less than 20 minutes and we were on our way.

15 years before, Adam had been ice climbing in Banff and knew about some climbs in the Ghost River that offered similar vistas to Banff National Park without the crowds. We opted to drive into the Ghost River Public Use Zone to boondock our OVRLND rig nestled among the mountains. Success! It felt like we had the whole river to ourselves and we prepared to go exploring the next day. But our plans were slowed down once we discovered a flat tire the following morning. That was quickly remedied and we got back to exploring. We even took a quick dip in the shallow river to clean up. The Ghost River was a real treat and we wished we could have stayed longer but we had to keep pushing North if we wanted to make it all the way to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska.

On the way North up the Icefields Parkway, we stopped at the Weeping Wall. Adam had climbed this frozen wall in 2012 and he wanted to show the boys. Our trip through Banff was not as scenic as the Ghost River because the valley was full of smoke and the scenery was very monochromatic.

North! Jasper is also situated in the Canadian Rockies but the town had been badly damage by a fire the previous year. Despite this the town was doing an amazing job of catering to all the visitors. Don’t let the fire keep you from going, it was well worth it! We stayed in the Whistlers campground which has amazing shower facilities and plenty of firewood. Two nights gave us plenty of time to explore and get an awesome hike in up Morro Peak.
