I promise this is not one of those motivation videos with Shia Lebeouf yelling at you [ • Shia LaBeouf "Just Do It" Motivational Spe... ]. Hello, and welcome to this motivational video for college students in the Success 101 course
[Bergen Community College logo]. For this section we will be looking at four important qualities that will help you succeed in college and beyond: motivation, grit, perseverance, and goal setting. Our objective is to help you graduate college and work towards finding personally meaningful and rewarding careers. That’s it!
Defining Terms [Graphic]
Motivation is the drive and energy that moves us to take action towards our goals. It's the reason why we get up in the morning and the energy that keeps us going when things get tough . . . when we have challenges. Motivation can come from inside you, from your personal values, interests, or life goals . . . things that are important to you. It can also come from external factors, such as the support of your family, friends, or mentors . . . maybe even a celebrity or famous person from history . . . even Shia Lebeouf.
Grit is a term used by psychologist Angela Duckworth to describe the combination of passion and perseverance towards long-term goals. It's the ability to persist and maintain effort despite setbacks, failures, or obstacles. People with grit are determined, resilient, and willing to work hard to achieve their goals . . . even when they don’t want to . . . or when something else might be more fun. They see challenges as opportunities to learn and grow, and they don't give up easily. They keep on keeping on.
Perseverance is similar to grit, but it's more focused on endurance and persistence. It's the ability to keep going despite difficulties, pain, or being really, really tired. Perseverance involves mental and physical toughness, as well as the willingness to tolerate pain and not-knowing. It's needed for achieving long-term goals, especially when you are faced with tough times.
Goal setting is the process of defining specific, measurable, and achievable targets that you want to accomplish. Goals can be short-term or long-term, and they can be related to any area of your life, such as academic, financial, personal, or in your career. Setting goals keeps you focused, motivated, and accountable. It also allows you to track your progress and celebrate your achievements. SMART goals are SPECIFIC, MEASURABLE, ACHIEVABLE, RELEVANT and TIMELY (or Time bound). I tell people my goals to keep me accountable.
Now that we've defined our terms, let's talk about how you can apply them here at Bergen to achieve your goals in college and beyond.
First, let's focus on motivation. To stay motivated, you need to identify your "why." Maybe you have heard the term “Know your why.” What motivates you to succeed? Is it your family, your career goals, or your personal values? Know this about yourself and let it guide you towards success. Also, remember to celebrate your successes, no matter how small they may be. Remembering and sometimes celebrating your achievements will give you the motivation to keep going. Keeping a list of what you have achieved can help you achieve more! Really!
Next, let's talk about grit and perseverance. To develop grit and perseverance, you need to cultivate a growth mindset. A growth mindset is the belief that you can develop and grow into more! This means believing that your abilities and intelligence can be developed through hard work and dedication. You can grow and develop into the person you want to be and achieve what you want to achieve. Embrace challenges and view them as opportunities to learn and grow. Be persistent, and don't let setbacks knock you down. Remember that your success is not a straight line, and that failure is a part of life. Failure lets you know how you are doing and maybe a need to think about your choices . . . maybe even change direction.
Goal setting is part of achieving your personally defined success. Set specific, measurable, and achievable targets that you want to accomplish. Write down your goals and make a plan on how to achieve them, including any steps you need to take to get there. Review your goals regularly and adjust them as needed. Tracking your progress will help you stay motivated and focused. Goals that are SMART [graphic] are more likely to get done!
Embrace challenges as opportunities to learn and grow. Set specific, measurable, and achievable goals, and track your progress regularly. Remember that success is not a straight line, and that failure is sometimes the universe helping you grow and get stronger. With these qualities, you improve your chance of achieving your dreams. Good luck on your journey and that’s it for this video.
