Gallo is spoken by some 28,000 people, primarily in the regions of Brittany and Normandy in northern France. One of the traditional Oïl languages, it forms part of the dialect continuum that includes Norman, Picard, and French itself. Though Gallo speakers faced linguistic discrimination for the greater part of the 20th century, the language is recognized as a regional minority language today.
