French is a Romance language that evolved from the Vulgar Latin spoken in the Roman Empire, specifically from Gallo-Romance in Northern Gaul. It is closely related to other langues d'oïl spoken in northern France and southern Belgium. French has become an official language in 27 countries and is widely spoken across about 50 countries and territories.

Gallo is a regional language from eastern Brittany and is part of the langues d'oïl, a sub-group of Romance languages that includes French. It is now spoken by a minority, with French dominating the region. Historically, Gallo was spoken in the Marches of Neustria, between Brittany, Normandy, and Maine. It was also used by many involved in the Norman conquest of England and contributed, along with Norman, to the development of Anglo-Norman French, which influenced English. Gallo is a distinct Gallo-Romance language, like Franco-Provençal.
