In this episode of Inspired Infrastructure, I’m exploring the urban design concept of transforming outdated one-way street pairs back into two-way streets. Generally implemented in the mid-20th century to move cars efficiently, one-way urban arterials and collector streets are now seen as barriers to safe, vibrant urban spaces.
Using Beyond Typicals to visualize the transformation, I’ll dive into the benefits of two-way conversions, from slowing traffic and improving safety to boosting local businesses. I’ll also touch on the challenges, like the costs and infrastructure changes required. Despite these hurdles, I believe these conversions are worth the investment for creating safer, more accessible streets for everyone.
