TRANSCRIPT
Friend, do you ever get the shivers when someone asks you to pray? Spontaneously, that is. I’m going to show you how to pray in three simple formats. We have a lot of traditional prayers, which are beautiful and foundational. But spontaneous prayer is beautiful because it comes from the heart. Here are a few guidelines before you even start praying.
First, all prayers should come from the Holy Spirit. So, ask the Spirit to guide you. Second, once the Spirit guides you, pick two or three areas of focus. Be very clear about your intention. See that the prayer is short, but most importantly, heartfelt. When you begin to pray, we start as Catholics do. We make the Sign of the Cross. Then pause for a moment of silence to be aware of God’s presence.
Now, here are the three formats. The first format is “A-T-A-T.” A for Address: How do you address God? Almighty God, Ever-Loving Father—whatever comes from your heart. T for Thanksgiving: Jesus’ way of prayer. Always begin with thanking God. Thank Him for whatever you wish. A for Ask: What do you want to ask? Maybe forgiveness, guidance, or grace. Finally, end with ‘Through’: Through Christ our Lord, or through our loving Savior. That’s the first formula.
The second format is “A-C-T-S.” You know this from regular prayer. Now use it for spontaneous prayer. A for Adoration: Adore and praise God. C for Contrition: Acknowledge your failings. T for Thanksgiving: Thank God for blessings. S for Supplication: Ask for your needs.
The third format is simple: “Past, Present, and Future.” We learned this as novices. For spontaneous prayer, use this: Past—how God was with you. Present—how God is here now. Future—ask God for His help. That’s all there is to it!
My dear friends, pray spontaneously. Don’t try to impress others. Forget about big words—pray from the heart. May Almighty God bless you, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Have a wonderful day with Jesus.
