How to ask God for what you want?
| Prayer of Petition
TRANSCRIPT
My dear friends, the prayer of petition is not just a child's prayer. It's a Biblical prayer and one of the most common forms of prayer in the Bible. Jesus himself tells us, "Ask, and you shall receive. Seek, and you will find. Knock, and the door will be opened." This is what St. Paul says: "Have no anxiety about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God."
The Catechism of the Catholic Church says, by prayer of petition, we express awareness of our relationship with God. We understand that every need can become an object of prayer. Two things to avoid when we pray the prayer of petition: first, it should not be selfish. St. James says, "You ask and do not receive because you ask wrongly to spend it on your own passions." Second, don't arm-twist God. Remember, He is Almighty God, and the prayer is not "My will be done" but "Thy will be done." Otherwise, God might give you what you want, which might not be best for you.
So, how do we pray the prayer of petition? First, always enter the presence of the Almighty Father. Then, specify clearly what you want in your prayer. For example, if you want to reach work on time, don't ask for a motorbike. Simply tell the Lord you want to reach work on time. He might not give you a motorbike, but maybe a neighbor with a Mercedes gives you a free lift. Second, always desire the will of God. Remember, He knows what's best for you. So pray, wait, and listen until you're sure what to ask for. Like Jesus said, "Not my will, but Thy will be done." If Jesus had said, "My will be done," there would be no crucifixion and no salvation. If we ask anything according to His will, He will hear us.
Finally, pray in complete faith. Ask in faith, never doubting. For the one who doubts is like a wave, driven and tossed by the wind. Before every miracle, Jesus asks one thing: "Do you believe?" Finally, always end your prayer in thanksgiving. One thing to remember in the prayer of petition is perseverance. Don't ever give up. By asking, the Father loves to hear you and purifies your petition.
So, my dear friends, get in the habit of the prayer of petition. And may Almighty God bless you, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Have a wonderful day with Jesus!
