On the Pacific Highway in northern rivers of New South Wales, The New Italy Museum celebrates the history, culture and courage of Italian families who arrived in Australia in the early 1880s in a desperate attempt to escape war, poverty and politics.
Those who survived the incredible hardships of a nightmare voyage established the community of New Italy just south of the township of Woodburn.
Today the New Italy Museum records the story of their arrival and determination to make a new life in Australia, along with a record of more than 11,700 descendants of the original settlers.
For some, the family connections and culture are still celebrated 140 years and six generations on as the families gather each year to keep their heritage and traditions alive by making salami in the traditional way.
This is their story.
