Oasis
Location: London, England, U.K
Venue: The Borderline Club
Date: 21st August 1994
Special Event: Cigarettes & Alcohol Video Shoot
Here we have not only one of the most interesting concerts for the Definitely Maybe Tour, but the entirety of Oasis’ live career. Situated in the Borderline Club in London, the boys film the ‘live’ segments for the upcoming Cigarettes And Alcohol single promo video. After finishing what needed to be filmed, the band then decide to play a non-rehearsed set to the members of the audience who had been brought in for the making of the video, probably for any extra bits that could be included in the final edit. What results is a bit of an impromptu performance which means the setlist is all over the place and there are some minor hiccups here and there from an obviously intoxicated band, but the instrumentalists still do fantastically overall, and they play probably the loosest and most psychedelic version of Columbia ever heard. Liam sounds great here too, though does crack here and there on some of the more demanding high notes probably from muddling through some of the songs. Still he gives plenty of songs a good-go..
But the added bonus of this performance is the tour debut performances of several songs. Firstly, at the very beginning of the recording we hear an improvised instrumental jam between the instrumentalists. The chords sound somewhat similar to It’s Good To Be Free, and is basically a soundcheck for the gig. Secondly, this is Listen Up’s first recorded performance on the tour. We only have three recorded versions of the song from this tour, though it was played at a few other shows around this time in the U.K (including the infamous Newcastle gig) but the song would be a mainstay on the setlist in late 1996. Thirdly, D’Yer Wanna Be A Spaceman is played for the first time, and the only time ever on electric guitars. The songs inclusion marks it as the first ever show where Noel sings lead vocals at an Oasis concert. Lastly, Whatever is played here too, and being only it’s second performance it gives the song a much more raw and punky feel, this would be the instrumentation for the song on it’s early performances. At this show Liam references David Bowie’s ‘Changes’ in the outro of the song as well as All The Young Blues, for the only known time.
