Music: Suite antiga, Op.11 - 3. Ária by Alberto Nepomuceno, performed by Luis Sarro.
This poem is one of my favourites by Tennyson, though in popular discourse it is often overshadowed by Ulysses, which is also great. Honestly, it may be my favourite dramatic monologue of all time (yes even when considering the works of Browning). I am a sucker for classical mythology and the archetype of the tragic immortal, characters like the Titan Prometheus, cursed to be disemboweled by an eagle for all of time, the Corinthian King Sisyphus (needs no explanation I'm sure), Doctor Manhattan, formerly a human physicist who was granted the powers of a god yet this robbed him of his precious humanity and eroded his capacity for empathy, and finally The Wandering Jew, who scorned Jesus prior to his death and was punished to walk the Earth alone eternally.
