About 10,000 years ago, lions were also found in Eurasia as well as America. With time, some species became extinct. Eight subspecies of lions are recognized. These include:
1. P. l. persica (Asiatic lion)
2. P. l. leo (Barbary lion)
3. P. l. senegalensis (West African lion)
4. P. l. azandica (Northeast Congo Lion)
5. P. l. nubica (East African or Masai lion)
6. P. l. bleyenberghi (Southwest African or Katanga lion)
7. P. l. krugeri (Southeast African or Transvaal lion)
8. P. l. melanochaita (Cape lion)
In 2017, the current Felidae taxonomy revision proposes that the Asian sub-population is closely related to the lions in the northern range of Africa and the southern and eastern African lions are a distinct subspecies. Thus the lion lower classifications (or lion subspecies) at present are:
1. Panthera leo leo - Central and West Africa and India
2. Panthera leo melanochaita - Southern and Eastern Africa
