Answering a distress call, Picard and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise encounter Ardra, who claims a centuries-old contract has made her the planet’s ruler. Though she cloaks herself in lingerie, illusion, and myth to sell the image of a seductive devil, Picard remains certain that no amount of magic can stand up to reason, science, and Federation principles.

🎞️ TRIVIA: This episode was adapted from an unused script originally written for the abandoned series Star Trek: Phase II in the late 1970s. Earlier Trek explored similar themes in The Magicks of Megas-Tu (1973), where another being claimed the mantle of the devil—reinforcing Trek’s long-standing theme of science exposing superstition.

🎞️ TRIVIA: Costume designer Robert Blackman received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Costume Design for a Series, thanks largely to Ardra’s bold, provocative costumes that blended seduction, power, and theatrical flair.

🎞️ TRIVIA: Stella Stevens and Adrienne Barbeau were both considered for the role of Ardra before Marta DuBois was cast. Barbeau would later return to the Star Trek universe as Romulan Senator Kimara Cretak in Deep Space Nine.
