STORYLINE:
Thousands of Yemenis in the Houthi rebel-controlled capital of Sanaa demonstrated on Friday in a show of solidarity with Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
Israel has designated a safe zone in southern Gaza, but its widening air and ground offensive has left Palestinians packed together in dire humanitarian conditions.
The resumption of the war threatens to compound the suffering in Gaza.
Some two million people - almost its entire population - are crammed into the territory's south, where Israel urged people to relocate at the start of the war and has since vowed to extend its ground assault.
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday urged the U.N. Security Council to push for an immediate humanitarian cease-fire in the Gaza Strip to protect civilians and deliver lifesaving aid.
The U.S. reiterated that it does not support an immediate cease-fire.
Around 1,200 people have died on the Israeli side, mainly civilians killed during Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack that triggered the war.
The Health Ministry in Hamas-run Gaza said the death toll in the territory has surpassed 17,400, with more than 46,000 wounded.
The ministry does not differentiate between civilian and combatant deaths, but said 70% of the dead were women and children.
