Welcome to Episode 10 of Reading, Minnesota!

In today’s episode, we’re back out in the fields as we put the finishing touches on all of the crops we’ve planted for Year 1 and continue dialing in our brand new MEGA Beef operation. Last episode was a massive milestone for this series, as we officially got the cattle side of the farm up and running by purchasing and bringing in our very first 1,000 head of beef cattle.

Alongside getting the cattle moved in and fed, we’ve also been busy in the background getting all of our crops planted for the year. At this point, we’ve got just over 500 acres of corn planted across multiple fields and roughly 70 acres of oats in the ground as well. All of these crops are now planted, growing, and off to a solid start for Year 1. But as the crops started to emerge, so did the weeds—and that means it’s time to get the sprayers out and take care of business.

To kick things off today, we find ourselves in one of our biggest fields on the farm: the 200-acre corn field. I’ve got both of our John Deere 4830 self-propelled sprayers here in the field, and our semi truck with the Phiber Dash tender trailer is fully loaded with herbicide and ready to go. I’ll be setting both sprayers up on Courseplay so they can work through this entire field efficiently, and I’ll also be setting up AutoDrive routes so that when the sprayers run out of chemical, they’ll automatically drive over to the tender trailer, refill themselves, and head right back out into the field to continue spraying.

Once the herbicide spraying is up and running smoothly, we’ll head back to the farm yard to fire up our second major operation of the day. Both of our Alfalfa fields that we recently harvested now need to have their soil pH corrected, so we’ll be sending a couple of tractors out with our John Deere DN345 lime spreaders to get those fields treated. I’ll also be firing up one of our semi trucks and hooking it up to the Trout River rear-lift live-bottom trailer so we can make trips down to the local co-op, load up with lime, and keep our spreaders refilled as they work through the fields on Courseplay.

And if two big field operations weren’t enough, we’ll also be adding a third job into the mix today. I noticed that a few plowing contracts have popped up from neighboring farms, and while we don’t own traditional plows, we do have two John Deere 2730 13-shank rippers that we haven’t really put to work yet. So today, we’re going to take on a plowing contract to put those rippers to the test and see how they perform in real field conditions. I’ll be running those rippers with two of our biggest tractors—the New Holland TJ500 and the Challenger MT 867—and the field we’re taking on is just under 100 acres in size. With both machines running, we should be able to knock this contract out fairly quickly.
