Welcome to Episode 9 of Reading, Minnesota!

Today is a massive milestone for this brand new series… because after weeks of preparation, planning, planting, mowing, chopping, hauling, and compacting — we are finally bringing in our first 1,000 head of Beef Cattle!

Over the past few episodes we’ve been laying the foundation for this exact moment. We kicked off our first ever silage harvest by mowing down over 100 acres of Alfalfa across two separate fields. Even though our first cut was a little early and didn’t yield quite what we hoped, we doubled down and purchased another field to make sure we had enough feed to get this operation started properly.

While we’ve been focused on livestock preparation, our crops haven’t stopped growing. We now have 500 acres of Corn and 70 acres of Oats pushing through the soil… and with that growth has come weeds. So alongside getting cattle delivered, we also need to fire up our spraying operation and protect the yield potential of our first full season here in Reading.

To kick things off today, we’ll jump into the Chevy Silverado and head over to the truck shed. All three of our semi trucks are getting put to work. Two of them will be heading down to the dealership to pick up brand new Wilson livestock trailers so we can start hauling Angus calves from the livestock dealer back to our feedlot. The third truck will be hooked up to our Phiber Dash spray tender trailer so we can make a bulk purchase of Herbicide and keep both of our John Deere 4830 sprayers running without downtime.

Once the sprayers are fueled up and filled, we’ll start them in the 200-acre field surrounding the farmyard. I’ll get both machines running on Courseplay, and when they run low they’ll automatically head to the field edge using AutoDrive to refill from the tender trailer. If everything is dialed in correctly, the spraying operation should run smoothly in the background while we focus on livestock logistics.

Each livestock trailer holds 100 Angus calves, meaning we’ll need 10 full loads to bring in our first 1,000 head. I’ll be setting up AutoDrive routes between the dealer and the feedlot to streamline the hauling process, but I’ll personally handle loading and unloading to make sure everything goes smoothly as we fill our first pen.

As soon as the cattle begin arriving, we’ll open up the silage bunker and officially begin feeding operations. To make that happen, we’ll be purchasing a brand new wheel loader — something we’re absolutely going to need as this operation scales toward 5,000 head and beyond. Once the loader arrives, I’ll begin filling our Meyer silage trailers and setting up additional AutoDrive routes so the trailers can shuttle feed from the bunker directly to the feedlot pens automatically.
