Zakat and Social Justice: An Islamic Economic Vision
All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. We praise Him, seek His help and forgiveness, and we seek refuge in Allah from the evils within ourselves and from our bad deeds. Whomsoever Allah guides, none can mislead, and whomsoever He leaves astray, none can guide. I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah alone, and I bear witness that Muhammad ﷺ is His final Messenger.
Respected brothers and sisters,
Islam is not only a religion of spiritual guidance;
it is also a complete system that establishes economic balance, social harmony, and justice among humanity.
One of the greatest pillars of this Islamic economic system is Zakat,
which is not merely charity but a divine mechanism designed to eliminate poverty, reduce inequality, and build a compassionate society.
Rested Brothers !
Zakat: A Divine Command and Social Responsibility.
Allah Almighty repeatedly emphasizes the importance of Zakat in the Qur’an alongside Salah,
highlighting its central role in building a righteous society.
Allah says in the Holy Qur’an:
وَأَقِيمُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَآتُوا الزَّكَاةَ
“Establish prayer and give Zakat.”
(Surah Al-Baqarah: 43)
This verse shows that Zakat is not optional generosity;
it is a compulsory act of worship that purifies wealth and strengthens social bonds.
Respected brothers!
Zakat reminds believers that wealth is a trust from Allah,
and its rightful distribution ensures that society functions with fairness and compassion.
Respect parents!
Islam recognizes that economic inequality can create social unrest, hatred, and division.
Therefore, Zakat serves as a powerful solution to protect society from exploitation and injustice.
Allah clearly defines the recipients of Zakat in the Qur’an:
إِنَّمَا الصَّدَقَاتُ لِلْفُقَرَاءِ وَالْمَسَاكِينِ وَالْعَامِلِينَ عَلَيْهَا وَالْمُؤَلَّفَةِ قُلُوبُهُمْ وَفِي الرِّقَابِ وَالْغَارِمِينَ وَفِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ وَابْنِ السَّبِيلِ
“Zakat expenditures are only for the poor, the needy, those employed to collect it, those whose hearts are to be reconciled, for freeing captives, for those in debt, for the cause of Allah, and for the stranded traveler.”
(Surah At-Tawbah: 60)
This comprehensive system ensures that wealth circulates among all members of society rather than remaining concentrated among the rich.
Zakat Purifies Wealth and Strengthens Brotherhood
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ beautifully explained the spiritual and social impact of charity. He said:
“Charity does not decrease wealth.”
(Sahih Muslim)
This Hadith teaches us that giving Zakat does not reduce prosperity; rather, it increases blessings, strengthens trust in Allah, and brings harmony between different social classes.
Respected brothers!
Islam strongly warns against ignoring the obligation of Zakat because withholding wealth harms society and weakens moral values.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Whoever is given wealth by Allah and does not pay its Zakat, his wealth will appear on the Day of Judgment as a bald-headed poisonous snake.”
(Sahih Bukhari)
This powerful warning reminds us that Zakat is not just social responsibility but also accountability before Allah
Zakat: Building a Balanced Economic Society
Zakat encourages generosity, reduces poverty, and promotes dignity among the needy.
It eliminates jealousy between social classes #islamicreminder #deen #hadith and replaces it with love, unity, and mutual care.
When Zakat is properly implemented, it creates a society where no one sleeps hungry and no individual is abandoned in hardship.
Islamic economic vision teaches us that true success is not measured by personal wealth alone but by how much benefit we bring to humanity.
Our final prayer is that all praise belongs to Allah, the Lord of all worlds.
